The Orrido di Sant'Anna

(Friday files)

This little bridge was built across the Sant'Anna gorge above Cannobio, in northern Italy, in medieval times. By peering over the edge of the more modern road bridge alongside it, you can get a giddying glimpse of the Cannobino river 25 metres below, as it plunges through the gorge (the 'Orrido') to reach Lake Maggiore.

Nearby is the church of Sant'Anna, built in 1683. We came across them unexpectedly when we went for a stroll (a brisk stroll - we had our long-legged daughter with us) along the river from Cannobio. Italy seems to be full of such marvels.
